Navigating Med-Tech Innovation: My Journey at Pureland Global Venture

Ocean Zheng

When I started my internship at Pureland Global Venture, I had no idea just how much it would shape my understanding of venture capital and the dynamic world of med-tech.

Pureland, a venture capital firm co-founded by an INSEAD professor, focuses on groundbreaking med-tech innovations and operates in both Singapore and China. Over six months, I was immersed in various projects that challenged my analytical skills, broadened my perspective, and deepened my passion for healthcare innovation.

Spearheading a China market entry strategy

During my internship, one of the standout experiences was leading a China market entry project for a portfolio company specialising in radiotherapy devices. With guidance from our partners, I explored the complexities of entering one of the world’s most challenging yet promising markets.

My work involved conducting in-depth research on market trends, regulatory requirements, and localisation strategies while identifying potential strategic partnerships. This effort will culminate in a presentation to the board, where critical decisions about the company’s expansion into China will be made. This experience sharpened my ability to manage complex projects and highlighted how collaboration drives impactful results.

Evaluating investment opportunities across borders

I also had the opportunity to evaluate potential med-tech investees across Asia, the U.S., and Europe. From screening candidates to interviewing CEOs of promising startups, I had a front-row seat to the innovative minds shaping the future of healthcare.

Each evaluation pushed me to think critically about the intersection of technology, market needs, and scalability, etc. Seeing how med-tech solutions can cross borders and address global healthcare challenges reinforced my belief in the power of innovation to transform lives.

Networking played a key role in my internship experience.

Building networks and expanding connections

For instance, I had the chance to visit a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) company in Suzhou, where I listened to an inspiring pitch from the founder and CEO. Additionally, I attended the Medical Fair 2024 in Singapore, a vibrant event that brought together industry leaders and innovators.

These opportunities allowed me to engage directly with top management from many cutting-edge companies, gaining valuable insights into their strategies and visions. These interactions not only expanded my professional network but also deepened my understanding of the med-tech ecosystem.

Reflections and takeaways

Looking back, my time at Pureland Global Venture has been an incredibly rewarding journey. The internship allowed me to dive deep into med-tech innovation while honing my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. It also taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance—essential traits in the fast-paced world of venture capital.

As I look ahead, I carry with me the lessons and inspiration I’ve gained from my experiences at Pureland. The intersection of med-tech and venture capital has not only broadened my horizons but also strengthened my commitment to creating meaningful impact through innovation.
