Can you introduce yourself to us - where you are from, what is your professional journey so far?

I'm from Chennai, India. I started out my career in management consulting with BCG for close to two years before shifting to my family business around COVID to help with the operations.

My family business operates in hospitality, mining, and infrastructure projects. Over the last few years prior to INSEAD, I've worn multiple hats, leading different projects across the different sectors — jumping from strategy to operational roles as the needs arise.

Why did you decide to come to INSEAD at this point of your career?

I felt like I had a strong understanding of the market my business operates in, and I saw the potential for its growth.

INSEAD at this point in time was a launchpad to become a better version of myself and acquire the skill sets and opportunities that will take me closer to my dream of consolidating my business into a conglomerate that stands the test of time.

What is the most challenging aspect about being a woman running her family business?

Having my voice heard and respected, especially as some of the industries we operate in are male-dominated.

Have you ever faced discrimination of some sort in your profession and, if so, how have you overcome it?

Yes, I have.

I'm often the only woman in the room, and in addition to that, the youngest.

I've approached the situation with patience, trying to put myself in their shoes. At times, it takes multiple instances of triggers in conversation or evidence to shift the point of view.

And at other times, it's resorting to the help of my allies to assist me with soft power in fighting my battles.

How has INSEAD helped you in your personal and professional journey so far?

It has connected me with many like-minded individuals and offered me immense opportunities to experiment and learn from. It has been like a safe sandbox — where it's okay to risk and fall, knowing you are only going to learn from it.

What is one piece of advice you would share with INSEAD current and prospective female candidates about working in a family business?

You are not alone! There's community out there - build your support system back at home as well as in INSEAD. Don't hesitate to ask for help!
