Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m 21 years old, and I’ve just finished my third year studying Spanish and German. I normally study in the UK at Oxford, but I’ve spent the past year in Germany. I grew up in London, and now live in Bristol. My background is mixed as my mum is half Turkish and half Lebanese. I also grew up speaking French at home.

How did you hear about the INSEAD Summer School?

My parents met at INSEAD while doing their MBAs in the late 1990s. I’d originally planned to do the Summer School programme for 15–18-year-olds, but COVID got in the way. Looking back, I’m actually glad I waited, because being a bit older means I’ve got so much more out of the experience. I wanted to explore business as a possible career path, and this seemed like the perfect way to get a taste of it.

How has the experience been so far?

I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve met people from so many different places, and I’ve gained insight into areas of business I’d never studied before. For example, today I learned so much about finance, which is something I’d never covered before. It’s been enlightening.

Has there been a class or moment that stood out for you?

Yes, the negotiations exercise. I didn’t realise how challenging it could be until we were in the thick of it. At one point, we were negotiating with someone who was completely against everything we said. Having my team there to back me up made a huge difference. It was stressful but also really rewarding.

What have you enjoyed doing outside the classroom?

I haven’t been out quite as much as some others, but I’ve enjoyed a few nights out. I’ve explored Fontainebleau, visited the Château, and gone for walks in the forest. The forest has these amazing rock formations and a plateau with stunning views. It’s definitely worth the trip.

Was this your first time in Fontainebleau?

Yes, although I’ve been to France before. I think Fontainebleau is lovely. It’s easy to get around, has great restaurants and bars, and the Château is beautiful.

Do you think what you’ve learned here will be useful in the future?

Definitely. I think it’ll help me when I start applying for graduate schemes next year, and it’s confirmed that I’d like to work in the business world. I’d also love to do an MBA later on, because I’ve enjoyed what we’ve learned so much.

The Summer School has been short and intensive, but it’s made me want to explore certain areas in much more depth.

What’s it been like meeting people from all over the world?

It’s been one of the best parts. Of course, I’ve spent time with some of the British participants, but some of my closest friends here are Austrian and Chinese. We’ve had some really interesting conversations, like hearing in detail about Norway’s social and economic situation, which I knew nothing about before.

Would you recommend the INSEAD Summer School?

Absolutely, 100 per cent. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. My only advice would be to arrive well-rested, as it’s an intense programme, so you need the energy for it. But it’s been a fantastic experience.
