The INSEAD Summer School was the perfect opportunity to learn new skills and meet people from all over the world.
Léa Ferry
Can you tell us about yourself?
I’m Lea, half French and half Swiss. I’ve just graduated from ESCP’s bachelor’s programme, and this past year I worked at L’Oréal as an apprentice for the Lancôme brand in their luxury division. It was a fantastic year, and now I’m looking forward to my next step.
Why did you decide to join the INSEAD Summer School?
My grandfather did the INSEAD MBA back in 1969, and I’ve been hearing about the school ever since I was born. I wanted to experience it for myself and explore whether the Master in Management or perhaps the MBA later on, might be right for me.
I also had the chance to meet with the admissions team, who spoke so highly of the programme, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to learn new skills and meet people from all over the world.
What skills have you developed here?
Definitely leadership skills, especially through group projects. Working with such a diverse mix of cultures has been eye-opening.
INSEAD really is diverse. Much more so than other schools I’ve attended.
I’ve also strengthened my finance knowledge through simulations, which helped me remember my business background while improving and deepening my understanding.
Has the learning connected to your bachelor’s studies?
Yes, absolutely. I’ve been able to apply what I learned during my bachelor’s, but the professors here bring concepts to life in a different, more practical way. Even when a topic is new, they start from the basics and make it easy to follow. The focus on application really helps the learning stick.
Key takeaways from the programme?
One key takeaway is learning how to truly understand and adapt to different cultures, not just in a classroom, but through living, eating, and working closely with people from around the world.
Another is knowing when to take the lead in group settings and how to do it effectively.
Did the programme influence your interest in the MIM or MBA?
Yes. We had an information session with alumni who shared their own projects and experiences, which gave me a real sense of what INSEAD is like. It’s not just a big name; it feels like a big family once you’re here.
How have the mentors contributed to your experience?
They joined us for the second week, especially for the "First 100 Days" simulation. They helped us build strategy, gave feedback on presentations, and even did role plays to prepare us for real-world situations. They also shared insights into the programme and what opportunities it opened for them.
Was there a particular moment that stood out?
Yes, the teambuilding on the first day. I’m afraid of heights, and one challenge involved walking on a rope while supported by others. At first, I thought I couldn’t do it, but my team was so supportive that I eventually overcame my fear. It was a big personal victory and a great way to start the programme.
Any tips for future participants?
Even if the application essay is optional, do it. Use it to share something personal that will help the admissions team get to know you. Bring sports clothes, as some activities are more physical than you expect. And come with an open mind, as it’s the best way to get the most out of the experience.
