Galya Hynes

Can you tell us about your studies and what drew you to business?

I live in London and study Mathematics at the University of Bristol. Before the Summer School, I hadn't been exposed to business much, although I had always been interested in it. I saw coming here as a big opportunity to learn more about that world. Outside my studies, I also spend a lot of time making music.

Why did you choose the INSEAD Summer School, and how had you heard about INSEAD?

I wanted to challenge myself and learn about something I did not know much about. It was something I had wanted to explore, but I had never really taken the initiative. I heard about the Summer School through my family. My dad completed an MBA at INSEAD and always raved about it, so I wanted to experience it for myself. Now I can see what he meant.

How has working with people from all over the world shaped your experience?

I had never been in a room with so many nationalities represented. It was amazing to meet people from countries I had never encountered before and learn about their cultures. When we work in teams, we often approach things very differently, but we still have the same goal in mind. I hope to stay in touch with many of the people I have met.

Which moments have been most memorable?

Presenting our projects to a very large group was memorable. It was nerve-racking, but also really fun, and it was rewarding to show everyone what we had been working on. The outdoor activities on the second day were another highlight. They helped us build teamwork, make friends and see one another’s competitive sides.

What have the group projects taught you about teamwork and communication?

I learnt how to work in a team under pressure. I had never been part of such an intense environment where we had to get something done so quickly. When many people are trying to achieve one thing, taking a step back and finding a way for everyone to work together is really powerful. People also have different ways of communicating, so learning to adapt while helping others understand my own style is a valuable skill that I will take away from the programme.

Has the Summer School influenced how you think about your future?

I had not considered the INSEAD Master in Management before coming here, and I still do not know exactly what I want to do after university. The Summer School has shown me that I could take very different paths. I could explore the financial side of mathematics, or move towards business and strategy. If I choose the latter, I would definitely consider the MIM.

Has anything surprised you?

I was surprised by how approachable the professors were.

 I expected INSEAD to feel quite intimidating, but the professors really value engagement and our opinions.  

Being able to talk to them after lectures has been very interesting. I was also struck by everyone’s motivation. Being in an environment like that has felt really special.
